Pricing strategy is the "why" — what your price communicates about your brand and where you position in the market. Pricing tactics are the "how" — the specific mechanisms you use to hit your revenue and margin targets at any given moment. This post is about the tactics.
The mistake most brands make is treating every pricing tactic as equivalent. Coupons and Lightning Deals feel similar — both reduce the price shoppers pay. But they serve different functions, reach different audiences, and have very different implications for your margin and your BSR. Using the wrong tactic for the moment is how you burn promotional budget without moving the right needles.
Start With Your Non-Negotiable: Price Floor
Before any tactic conversation, you need to know your contribution margin. Specifically: what is the minimum price at which your contribution margin stays positive? That is your floor. Every promotional tactic — every coupon, every deal, every discount — needs to be evaluated against that floor. Promotional pricing below your contribution margin floor is not a tactic. It is a subsidy. You are paying Amazon and the shopper for the privilege of making a sale that loses you money.
Your floor calculation: selling price minus referral fee, minus FBA fee, minus COGS (landed), minus advertising spend at your target TACoS, minus a returns allowance. What remains is your contribution margin. The minimum acceptable floor for most brands is a positive contribution margin — ideally 20% or above. Below that, the business has no room to absorb volatility.
Know your floor. Then design tactics around it.
Dynamic Pricing: When and Why
Dynamic pricing means adjusting your price in response to real-time signals: competitor price changes, inventory levels, demand fluctuations, and Amazon algorithm behavior. Large sellers use automated repricing tools to execute this at scale. For most brand sellers, the relevant question is not whether to automate every price change — it is which signals should trigger a deliberate pricing review.
Signals worth acting on:
- Competitor price drops below a significant threshold: If a direct competitor drops more than 10 to 15% below your price and has comparable reviews, monitor your conversion rate for 7 to 14 days before responding. A short-term competitor discount does not require a permanent price adjustment.
- Inventory surplus approaching storage fee period: If you are heading into October with excess inventory, a temporary price reduction or deal to clear inventory is preferable to paying elevated Q4 storage rates on units that may not sell.
- Organic rank opportunity: If SQP data shows you are near a conversion rate threshold that would push you to a top-3 organic ranking on a high-volume keyword, a temporary price reduction to accelerate velocity on that keyword can be a deliberate rank-building investment — not a panic response.
What dynamic pricing should not be: a reactive race to match every competitor price move, or an automated tool set to always be 1% cheaper than the lowest price on the page. Automated race-to-the-bottom repricing is how brands destroy their pricing architecture in three months.
Coupons: The Most Misused Tactic on Amazon
Amazon coupons appear as a green badge on your product listing in search results: "Clip coupon — save 15%." The badge creates visual differentiation in the search results page and can meaningfully lift click-through rate. That click-through rate benefit is often why brands use coupons — not primarily for the discount itself.
What most brands miss: Amazon charges $0.60 per coupon redemption. At scale, with a high-velocity product, coupon redemption fees add up fast. A 1,000-unit week with a 40% coupon clip rate costs you $240 in coupon fees alone, on top of the revenue reduction from the discount itself. Run coupons with that math in mind.
When coupons make sense:
- Driving click-through rate on a new listing that has the organic content to convert but needs traffic to prove it
- Staying visible in a "deals" filter that shoppers use in your category
- Moving slow inventory without triggering Amazon's automated price history tracking in the same way that permanent price reductions do
When coupons are being misused: when they are set and forgotten as a permanent feature of the listing, quietly reducing margin on every sale without a deliberate review of whether the click-through rate benefit justifies the cost. Coupons should be evaluated on a contribution margin basis like every other discount vehicle.
Lightning Deals: High Visibility, High Cost, Short Window
Lightning Deals are time-limited promotions (typically 4 to 12 hours) that appear on Amazon's Deals page and carry a "Deal" badge in search results. Amazon controls eligibility — your product needs to meet minimum review thresholds and the deal price needs to represent a genuine discount from your recent average selling price.
Lightning Deals work well for:
- Generating a velocity spike for a new product that needs BSR momentum
- Clearing a specific quantity of inventory in a defined window
- Black Friday / Cyber Monday / Prime Day — the traffic multiplier on those events makes a Lightning Deal far more valuable than the same deal on an ordinary Tuesday
The cost structure: Amazon charges a fee to run a Lightning Deal (currently $300 during peak periods like Prime Day). Add the discount from your selling price and the coupon-style redemption dynamics, and a Lightning Deal is a meaningful marketing spend — not a trivial promotional toggle. Treat it as a marketing investment with an expected return in rank improvement and review velocity, not as a way to clear inventory on a budget.
One critical caveat: Amazon's algorithm tracks your price history. Regularly running Lightning Deals or deep discounts can reset your "regular price" reference point, making future promotions look like smaller discounts and potentially suppressing future deal eligibility. Do not run deals so frequently that your deal price becomes your effective everyday price.
Promotional Pricing for New Product Launches
During the launch phase of our PPC Lifecycle framework, promotional pricing is a deliberate, time-limited tool to build velocity, reviews, and organic rank. The mechanics:
- Launch at a price 15 to 25% below your intended mature price to reduce the conversion threshold for early buyers who are taking a chance on a new product

- Use a coupon or temporary discount to push velocity and BSR during the first 4 to 8 weeks
- Step the price up toward your target in increments as reviews accumulate and rank builds — $2 to $3 per step, waiting 2 to 4 weeks between steps to monitor conversion rate impact
This approach accepts below-target contribution margin during launch as an investment in rank, then recovers margin as organic positioning stabilizes. The mistake is either: (a) launching at full price with no velocity strategy and expecting the algorithm to reward you, or (b) launching with a steep discount and never stepping the price back up.
Subscribe and Save Pricing
For consumable products — supplements, personal care, food, cleaning supplies — Subscribe and Save is one of the most powerful tools available on Amazon. Customers who enroll in Subscribe and Save receive a 5 to 15% discount on each shipment in exchange for committing to regular delivery. You get predictable, recurring revenue. They get automatic replenishment at a lower price.
The discount comes out of your margin, but the offset is a dramatically lower customer acquisition cost on every repeat purchase — no advertising spend, lower return rate, and higher lifetime value per customer. For brands where repurchase rate and lifetime value are core to the business model, Subscribe and Save enrollment is table stakes, not optional.
Optimize your Subscribe and Save discount tier based on your category's natural repurchase cycle. If your product is a 30-day supply, offer a monthly delivery option. If your product is a 90-day supply, do not force customers into a 30-day delivery they do not need — it leads to cancellations and stockpiling complaints.
MAP Compliance as a Pricing Tactic
If you sell through authorized distributors or retail partners who also sell on Amazon, MAP enforcement is a pricing tactic — not just a brand policy. Without active MAP enforcement, authorized resellers will undercut each other and ultimately undercut your direct Amazon price. The result: your product's market price erodes, your contribution margin erodes, and your brand's pricing positioning erodes with it.
MAP enforcement tools and approaches:

- A clear, written MAP policy that authorized sellers sign as a condition of distribution
- A systematic response workflow: automated notice on first violation, escalation and purchase order suspension on repeat violation
- An appeal process for authorized sellers who have a legitimate reason for a temporary deviation

Competitive Pricing Tools: How to Use Them Without Being Used by Them
Competitive pricing tools — automated repricers — are valuable when configured correctly and dangerous when configured lazily. The "always beat the lowest price by 1%" configuration is a tool for commodities and arbitrage sellers. For a brand, it guarantees that your price will drift toward the lowest competitor on your page, regardless of whether that competitor has comparable quality, reviews, or brand standing.
A better configuration: set a floor at your contribution margin floor price, set a ceiling at your target price, and use the repricer to maintain positioning within that range based on buy box eligibility — not to race to the bottom. If you are winning the buy box at your target price, there is no reason to reprice down. Only reprice if you are losing the buy box to a legitimate competitor (not a low-quality knockoff) and only down to a floor that preserves positive contribution margin.
